Kipkosgei and Chepkemoi scoops gold medals in U18 racew categories at ISF world Cross Country

Phanuel Kipkosgei and Diana Chepkemoi emerged victorious at the ISF World Cross Country for School under 18 titles held today at Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi.

Kenya displayed exceptional prowess in cross country, dominating all six categories against their formidable opponents, Uganda, who had claimed victory in Slovakia last year.

The competition featured races across six categories for boys and girls under 18, under 15, and under 12.

Hosted in Nairobi, Kenya secured six gold, six silver, and five bronze medals, affirming their position as a powerhouse in athletics and instilling hope for the nation’s future in sports. Uganda claimed a bronze in the boys under 12 category.

Diana Chepkemoi wins U18 Girls category

Diana Chepkemoi, a form three student at Saramek Secondary School, triumphed in the 3.4km race with a time of 10:49.8, leading Mary Nyaboke, the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) 1,500m champion from St. Peters’ Keberesi Secondary School, who finished second in 10:51.4. Dorcas Chepkwemoi, also a form three student at St. Francis Kongit, secured the third position with a time of 10:53.4, completing an all-Kenyan podium sweep.

Reflecting on her victory, Chepkemoi expressed her joy, stating, “I’m thrilled to have won today. The race was challenging, and this victory holds significant meaning for me, considering my thorough preparations for this event and the promising future it suggests.”

In the boys’ category, Kipkosgei claimed the under 18 title, solidifying his top position. The form three student from St. Francis Kimuron in Elgeyo Marakwet County completed the race in 14:39.6, ahead of Kevin Kiprop at 14:43.6 and Nelson Simire at 14:53.4, securing the second and third positions, respectively.

Wangari and Lomuryon dominates U15 category at ISF world cross country championships

Jane Wangari and Peter Lomuryon Pangai emerged victorious in the under 15 category at the ISF event held at Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi.

Wangari, a form one student at Kiambogo Secondary School, claimed the girls’ title in the 2.2 km race with a time of 7:40.8. She surpassed Faith Jeptum from Sinonin Secondary School, who finished second with a time of 7:42.1, and Clair Cheruto in third at 7:43.2.

Kenyan athletes dominated the race, securing the top ten positions in the under 15 girls’ category. Wangari mentioned that they had strategized for these outcomes the night before the event, aiming for a strong finish to honor their country.

“I had aimed for a top 10 finish, but fortunately, I clinched the victory. I’m delighted; we had planned to achieve good results and bring pride to our nation,” Wangari remarked.

In the boys’ category, Peter Lomurwon Pangai claimed the title with a time of 10:18.6, leading ahead of Benson Kirongos Tipapa (10:22.5) and Dan Kibet from Kibobo (10:33.5).

Sheilah Jepkosgei and Ezron Kimurgor wins U12 titles ISF World Cross Country

Sheila Chepkosgei Tarus and Ezron Kimurgor clinched the  U12  titles at the ISF World Schools Cross Country Championships hosted at Ngong Racecourse, Nairobi, on Sunday.

Tarus, a Grade six student at Tiloa Primary School, spearheaded a Kenyan sweep in the 1200m race, finishing in 3:55.2 and securing the top spot. She outpaced Belinda Chepkorir, who took second place with a time of 3:55.1, followed by Dorcas Chelangat Kemei in third with a time of 3:57.1.

Despite initially placing fourth during the trials, Tarus persevered and used it as motivation to intensify her training. Reflecting on her victory, she mentioned, “I had trained rigorously leading up to today’s event, and my goal was to claim victory. I’m ecstatic about these results.”

In the boys’ category, Kimurgor, a grade 6 student from Kabiyet Township Primary School, dominated the race with a time of 3:43.5, securing the championship title. He was followed by Benjamin Shikuku in second place with a time of 3:46.7, and Ugandan Caleb Kibet Chasinja took the third spot with a time of 3:48.8.

Why Kenya Will Continue to Be a Dominant Force for Years to Come In Athletics

The 2024 Sirikwa Classic Cross-country was proof enough that Kenya will continue producing athletics greats in the many years to come.

The race organisers, led by Barnaba Korir, disclosed that they had planned for about 1000 kids but then a larger number turned out and they had to send some youngsters home.

However, he promised that going forward, Athletics Kenya will be keen to organise events that will host as many athletes as they can to avoid such inconveniences.
