There was a vibrant and competitive atmosphere at the 2nd edition of the Great Chepsaita Cross Country in Uasin Gishu County, with over 10,000 participants registering for the global event.

The massive turnout highlighted the eagerness of upcoming athletes to showcase their skills and compete against peers, marking the race as a crucial platform for nurturing emerging talent.

In the 4km girls' category, Caren Chepng’eno emerged victorious, outpacing a strong field of competitors. The 15-year-old Form One student at Tiloa Girls in Kuresoi, Nakuru County, demonstrated her determination and preparation, having trained diligently at home.

Chepng’eno’s victory was particularly meaningful after finishing 16th in last year’s edition. Motivated by her elder sister, Chepkurui, the 2021 World Under-20 champion in the 1500m race, she said her aim was to prove her potential on the track.

“I wanted to prove my potential after coming 16th in last year’s Chepsaita race. My elder sister, Chepkurui, has always been my motivation in running,” Chepng’eno shared. 

She is now setting her sights on upcoming track events, eager to see how her body adapts to different challenges. Her story is a testament to the value of hard work, persistence, and having a role model to look up to in sports.

Balancing her passion for athletics with academics, Chepng’eno expressed her commitment to excelling in both areas. “My goal is to do well both in sports and also in class,” she said, acknowledging the delicate balance required to achieve success in both fields.

With her victory at Chepsaita and her resolve to continue training, Chepng’eno is undoubtedly a rising star to watch in the world of athletics.

The Great Chepsaita Cross Country continues to serve as a significant inspiration and stepping stone for young athletes, with many crediting the event for igniting their passion for running.

Among them is Ebra Chebet, who expressed her delight at making it to the podium. Training in the Chepsaita area, known for its high altitude and challenging terrain, has given her a competitive edge.

Chebet shared that she draws immense inspiration from Faith Kipyegon, whose success motivates her to believe in the possibility of achieving her dreams.

“Since the launch of the Chepsaita cross-country race, it has motivated many young athletes here to start training,” Chebet said.

She emphasized the positive impact of the race on the local community and her hopes for a successful career in athletics, citing its potential as a lucrative and fulfilling pursuit.

Brenda Cherotich, another promising talent, shared a similar story of inspiration. The Form Three student at Sirikwa High School in Nakuru County has been motivated by the achievements of Beatrice Chebet and Sifan Hassan. She uses cross-country races as a critical part of her preparation for the track and field season, with her sights set on excelling in the 3000m steeplechase.

“My running has been motivated by the success of Beatrice Chebet and Sifan Hassan. Going forward, I want to improve my running in the 3000m steeplechase,” said Cherotich. With a focused approach and role models to look up to, she is determined to carve a path to success in her athletic career.

The stories of Chebet and Cherotich underline the transformative power of local events like Chepsaita in nurturing and inspiring future champions.

The meet director, Barnaba Korir, expressed his delight at the impressive turnout at the Great Chepsaita Cross Country, which drew more than 10,000 participants.

Korir emphasized that the overwhelming response highlights the community's deep interest in athletics and the sport's growing popularity across Kenya.

“This turnout is a testament to how much the community and Kenyans at large are passionate about athletics,” said Korir.

He noted that the event's success not only showcases local talent but also reinforces the importance of grassroots competitions in identifying and nurturing future champions.

Korir praised the efforts of athletes, coaches, and the local community for making the event a success, adding that such platforms are vital for inspiring the next generation of runners. He expressed optimism that with continued support, the Great Chepsaita Cross Country would remain a key fixture in developing Kenya’s long-standing legacy in athletics.

Athletics Kenya President Jack Tuwei reaffirmed the federation's commitment to nurturing talent from the grassroots, recognizing the critical role such support plays in the development of future champions. Speaking during the Great Chepsaita Cross Country, Tuwei emphasized the importance of creating opportunities for young athletes to showcase their abilities.

“As a federation, we are committed to supporting athletes from the grassroots to help them realize their potential,” Tuwei said.

He also highlighted that events like the Chepsaita Cross Country serve as a foundation for identifying and nurturing promising talent, enabling them to transition to national and international competitions.

Tuwei commended the large turnout at the event, noting that it was a reflection of the vibrant running culture in Kenya.

He pledged that Athletics Kenya would continue to invest in similar initiatives to ensure that aspiring athletes receive the resources and guidance they need to succeed on the global stage.

Farouk Kibet, who initiated it as a platform for both talent development and the support of education for young athletes. With a strong belief in the power of sports to shape future leaders, Hon. Kibet envisioned a race that would not only discover and nurture athletic talent but also provide opportunities for the children to further their education.

The event was graced by the Deputy President of Kenya, H.E. Prof. Kithure Kindiki, who congratulated the Patron for theming the race around education. “When you have an educated person who is a talent holder, it cannot be compared to a talent holder who doesn't have an education. I want to thank Farouk, the patron of this run, for theming it around education, and it's a big challenge for the government,” Prof. Kindiki said, emphasizing the importance of combining athletics with academic excellence.

The event also received international recognition, with Kalkaba Malboum, the President of the African Athletics Confederation, congratulating the event organizers for hosting such a well-executed race. “This is a wonderful initiative. It gives young athletes the opportunity to showcase their talents on an international stage,” he said. Athletics Kenya (AK) President Jack Tuwei expressed AK’s commitment to supporting young talents. “Athletics Kenya is dedicated to nurturing and supporting the next generation of athletes, and this event is a perfect example of how we can work together to bring more opportunities to our youth,” Tuwei stated.

Barnabas Korir, AK's Youth Development Director, was also impressed by the large turnout, noting that it reflected the growing demand for such platforms. “The overwhelming participation in this event shows that our kids are ready for more opportunities to showcase their talent. We are delighted by the performances today, and we believe this will inspire even more young athletes,” Korir said.

The event also attracted several renowned athletes, including world record holder Eliud Kipchoge, three-time Olympic champion Faith Kiyegon, former world Javelin champion Julius Yego, former Olympic 3000m sc  Conseslus Kipruto, marathoner Amos Kipruto, former world 800m champion Janet Jepkosgei, and many other notable figures in Kenyan athletics.

Their presence was a huge motivation for the young runners. “We are here today to show the kids that their dreams are valid. With hard work and dedication, they can achieve greatness, just like us,” said Kipchoge, encouraging the young athletes to pursue both their education and athletic dreams.

In addition to the elite races, the Chepsaita Cross Country Run featured a range of categories for younger athletes, providing a platform for kids of all ages to compete and showcase their talents. The diversity of the event reflected its broad appeal, with categories for children as young as 5 years old, all the way up to 15-year-olds. This inclusive approach was praised for giving every child the opportunity to participate and potentially be discovered, regardless of their age or experience level.

Hundreds of children gathered in Chepsaita, Uasin Gishu County, to participate in the Chepsaita Cross Country, an initiative designed to identify and nurture young athletic talent.

 Barnabas Korir, Director Youth Development at Athletics Kenya, highlighted that the event is aligned with the World Athletics Kids Athletics Program, which focuses on creating a strong foundation for young athletes. Korir emphasized that the initiative aims to discover and support promising talent, providing these young athletes with opportunities to excel in their sport.

"We are committed to developing future stars and improving training facilities to ensure these kids reach their full potential," said Korir.

The Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run was filled with thrilling moments as young athletes showcased their incredible talent across various age categories, each race brimming with excitement and fierce competition.

 In the 500m race for the 5-7 year olds, seven-year-old Bramwel Kimutai of AIC Kipnyigei Primary was unstoppable, charging ahead to clinch victory in the boys’ category with an impressive time of 3:35. His energy and determination were evident as he powered through the finish line. On the girls’ side, Faith Cherotich shone brightly, crossing the finish line in 4:00 minutes to secure the win and prove that speed and grace go hand in hand.

The 1km race for the 8–10-year-olds was equally competitive. Nahashon Kibet of Cheptigit Primary soared to victory in the boys' race, clocking an impressive 4:46, while Ivyne Chebet claimed the top spot in the girls' category with a solid time of 4:58. Both athletes displayed exceptional speed, battling not just their competitors but the clock itself.

 The 2km race for the 11–13-year-olds saw Kevine Mkulia emerged victorious in the boys’ category, completing the race in a fast 7:06 minutes. His stride was relentless as he surged ahead, leaving his opponents trailing in his wake. Meanwhile, Gloria Jebogogo of Tiloa Primary School triumphed in the girls’ race, finishing in 7:28 minutes, her strong pace and fierce determination earning her a well-deserved victory.

Finally, in the 4km race for the 14-15 year olds, the boys’ race witnessed a dominant performance from Jairus Kipkorir, who crossed the finish line in 12:49 minutes, his focused expression reflecting his relentless effort throughout the race. On the girls’ side, Caren Chepngeno, a Form One student at Tiloa High School, showed remarkable stamina and speed, securing the win in 14:33 minutes.

 The Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run not only showcased the raw athleticism of these young runners but also highlighted their resilience, teamwork, and passion for the sport.

The upcoming Great Chepsaita Cross Country Run, set for this Saturday, has generated significant enthusiasm among young athletes.

 As a World Athletics Gold level event, it not only features elite races but also offers various categories for children participation. Children, accompanied by their parents, gathered in large numbers at the Chepsaita venue today to collect their bibs and prepare for the competition. Many of the young participants expressed their confidence, with the prospect of securing scholarships to continue their education in school serving as a primary motivation.

The race will feature multiple categories, offering opportunities for boys and girls in different age groups: a 500m race for children aged 5-10 years, a 1km race for those aged 8-10 years, a 2km race for juniors aged 11-13 years, and a 4km race for teens aged 14-15 years. These categories are designed to foster a spirit of competition and provide a platform for both boys and girls to showcase their athletic talent, with the added incentive of winning scholarships that support their educational aspirations.

Barnabas Korir, the Director for Youth Development at Athletics Kenya, lauded the initiative by the event’s Patron, Hon. Farouk Kibet, acknowledging the impact of the race on both education and talent development. “This race offers not only a chance for young athletes to shine but also a valuable opportunity to continue their education through the scholarships on offer,” Korir stated.

He highlighted how the event aligns with the ethos of nurturing young talent while also addressing the educational needs of the youth. 

The slogan "Running for Education" resonates deeply with the participants, who are eager to perform and secure scholarships that will help them pursue their academic dreams.

Korir also took the opportunity to commend the Cabinet Secretary for Sports for his unwavering support of youth camps across the country. He emphasized the Minister’s commitment to visiting these camps and observing firsthand the progress and performance of the young athletes.

“This level of involvement and support has been instrumental in the development of sports at the grassroots level, ensuring that future athletes have the resources and motivation to excel.” Korir added.

Patron of the Chepsaita Cross Country Race, Farouk Kibet, has underscored the importance of physical fitness in preparation for the race scheduled for this Saturday in Chepsaita.

Speaking today at the free medical camp held at Chepsaita, Farouk emphasized that the initiative serves not only as a health check-up but also as a valuable opportunity for participants to assess their physical readiness for the competition.

"This medical camp is an important step for athletes, particularly the elderly and children, as it provides an opportunity to gauge their fitness levels ahead of the race," Farouk stated.

He also expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiastic turnout of children at the camp and their eagerness to compete on Saturday. "The future of sports in our country depends on how we nurture young talent. I am pleased to see that the Chepsaita Cross Country features several categories for children, as this is key to developing tomorrow's champions," Farouk added.
