Hundreds of enthusiastic pupils gathered on Saturday for the second edition of the St. Agatha Mokwo Cross Country Championships at the school in Elgeyo Marakwet County. The event, a significant fixture on kids athletics calendar, was attended by Athletics Kenya Youth Development Director Barnabas Korir.

The young athletes competed across various race categories: 1km, 2km, and 4km for both boys and girls, and 6km for the U20 category. The event provided an excellent platform for the pupils to showcase their abilities and gain valuable experience.

Many participants expressed optimism for their future in athletics, citing previous competitions like the Discovery Kenya Cross Country, Chepsaita Cross Country, and others. They also viewed the race as an important step in preparing for the upcoming Sirikwa Classic World Athletics Cross Country Tour, scheduled for this weekend in Eldoret. The Sirikwa Classic, known for incorporating children's categories, continues to attract hundreds of young athletes annually.

Lucy Ruto, the Deputy HeadTeacher of Kittany Primary School, shared her pride in the kids' dedication to athletics. "I’m very happy seeing how the kids are competing. I brought a number of them who are passionate about athletics, and they have been training hard at our school. It’s incredibly inspiring to see such races—events like these really motivate children from an early age to develop a love for the sport," she said.

Barnabas Korir, who graced the event, emphasized the importance of Athletics Kenya’s Kids Athletics Programme, which aims to introduce children to the world of sports and help them discover their potential. "The Kids Athletics Programme is designed to help kids develop an interest in athletics early on, so they can identify which events they excel in and nurture their talent. This initiative is gaining momentum," Korir remarked. "The program will ensure that we have a continuous pipeline of talented athletes who will eventually transition to the senior level, helping Kenya maintain its position as a powerhouse in global athletics."

The participation of young athletes alongside elite runners at the Absa Sirikwa Classic World Athletics Cross Country Tour presents a unique opportunity for the younger generation to learn from and be inspired by established professionals in the field.

Now in its fourth edition, the event will take place on February 22, 2025, at the Lobo village in Uasin Gishu County, bringing together both youth and senior athletes. Barnaba Korir, the Athletics Kenya (AK) Youth Development Director and race director, emphasized the importance of involving young athletes in such high-profile events, as it offers them a platform to hone their skills and gain invaluable experience.

"Having kids participate in events like the Absa Sirikwa Classic is crucial for their development. It gives them an opportunity not only to showcase their talents but also to learn from seasoned athletes. Watching the elite runners in action will undoubtedly be an inspiring experience for the young participants, motivating them to push harder and dream bigger," said Korir. "It’s not just about the competition, it's about creating an environment where these kids can see what is possible through hard work and dedication."

Korir also pointed out that such experiences offer significant developmental value for the children, with the potential to ignite a lifelong passion for athletics. "It’s an invaluable experience for the kids to be in the same space as their role models, cheering them on, and envisioning their own journey to greatness."

The event will feature several categories for children: a 500m race for ages 5-8, a 1km race for ages 9-12, and a 2km race for ages 13-16, with both boys and girls participating. There will also be senior categories including a 6km race for U20 women, an 8km race for U20 men, and 10km races for both senior women and men.

In his remarks, Athletics Kenya (AK) President Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Jack Tuwei highlighted the organization's commitment to nurturing the country’s future champions through various development programs. "The success of Kenya's elite athletes has been built on a strong foundation, and we are committed to ensuring that our young talents are given the resources and platforms they need to excel. I’m particularly pleased that this year’s event will again give children the chance to showcase their athletic abilities. It's an important step in shaping the next generation of athletes," said Tuwei.

Paul Tergat, President of the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K), echoed this sentiment, stressing the importance of more opportunities for young athletes. "It’s where it all begins for so many of our top athletes—competing in local races and running with passion all the way to school. We need more events like the Absa Sirikwa Classic, which provide our children with a chance to compete and showcase their talents," said Tergat. "These events are the breeding grounds for our future stars."

Korir also announced that prizes would be awarded to the children participating in the race, further incentivizing them and recognizing their hard work.

 The 5th edition of the Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country Tour in Eldoret will provide a unique opportunity for young athletes to showcase their talent. 

Set to take place on February 22, 2025 at Lobo Village, the event will feature not only senior races but also dedicated kids’ categories. This inclusion is a significant part of Athletics Kenya's ongoing efforts to enhance the development of young athletes in sports.

Barnabas Korir, the Athletics Kenya Youth Development Director, emphasized the importance of youth development in athletics. “Incorporating kids’ races in prestigious events like the Sirikwa Classic is part of Athletics Kenya’s commitment to nurturing young talent,” Korir said. “Kids’ development is key, as it gives children a chance to practice their abilities and hone their skills.”

Athletics Kenya’s focus on youth has already yielded positive results, with numerous competitions held throughout the season, boosting young athletes' confidence and strengthening a deeper love for the sport. “This is the  athletics season in the school calendar, making it the perfect time for schools to field their athletes in the kids' categories,” Korir added.

 The event, founded by Dr. Gabriele Rosa, has long been a platform for identifying and nurturing young athletic talent, with many past participants going on to achieve success on the international stage.

Apart from the senior and under 20 races, the event featured various categories for children, including a 500-meter race for ages 5-6, a 1-kilometer race for ages 7-9, and a 2-kilometer race for ages 10-12 for both boys and girls.

According to Race Director David Letting, preparations for this year’s edition are well underway. He emphasized the race’s pivotal role in discovering young talent, many of whom have gone on to achieve success on the international stage, representing Kenya in global competitions.

 Previous editions have seen impressive participation from young athletes, offering them invaluable experience and motivation to pursue their athletic dreams.
